The Courier Mail uses Rider Levett Bucknall's Oceania Construction Cost Commentary April 2008 to bring attention to Queensland's rising building costs.
According to the Oceania Construction Cost Commentary, Brisbane's building costs are on par with Sydney and are tipped to overtake weighted average Australian construction costs.
A large factor in the rising cost is steel which as Rider Levett Bucknall Brisbane's Managing Director, Mark Burow said: "Supply worldwide is not as available as it has been." Space is another contributing factor Burow says with many commercial projects underway driving up demand for earthworks, piling and structural trades. "Inevitably this has resulted in significant pressures on supply of reinforced concrete and steelworks."
